The World of PAC-MAN

The World of PAC-MAN

PAC-MAN

PAC-MAN is an arcade game created by NAMCO in the year 1980. The player controls PAC-MAN and must eat all the dots in the maze trying to avoid the colored ghosts Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde. Eating large flashing dots called energizers that are able to help PAC-MAN(You) eat the ghosts and get you extra points which all turn blue once the energizer is eaten by PAC-MAN.

PAC-MAN in his own movie!

The Origins of PAC-MAN

The game was created by NAMCO in Japan, and released in the united states by by Midway. PAC-MAN's game designer, Toru Iwatani thought that PAC-MAN was an antidote to the overwhelming number of games with violent themes, such as Asteroids, Space Invaders, Tail Gunner, and Galaxian. PAC-MAN's Pac-Man's innovative break away from the shoot-em-up style of arcade game would crack open the video game universe.

Gameplay of PAC-MAN

You start by inserting the coin at the bottom of the arcade cabinet, but not just any coin, it has to be a quarter. If somehow the quarter gets jammed, then you can press the shiny red light up red eject button. But when the quarter is inserted you press the one or two player button depending on if you want to play against someone. Then to move around use the toggle in the middle of the control area.

PAC-MAN stories

So you looked at the timeline of all the different and many, many PAC-MAN games. Just by looking at the titles of these games you can probably tell that some of them are better than others. But you are about to read about many great storys of some of the great virsions of PAC-MAN such as, Ms PAC-MAN, Super PAC-MAN, Jr PAC-MAN and Baby PAC-MAN. First we will talk about the backstory of Ms PAC-MAN.

Ms PAC-MAN

Ms PAC-MAN was originally conceived as an kit for PAC-MAN to make the game harder because many people were figuring out many patterns for the ghost movement. It was planned to make the game harder by making the ghosts movement more randome and change the types of maze the farther you go into the game. This kit was called Crazy Otto, created by MIT students that were programmers employed at the General Computer Corp (GCC). While Crazy Otto was under development, GCC settled a lawsuit with Atari over their Missile Command conversation kit Super Missile Attack. Luckily the GCC won the case so they did not have to pay about 5 MILLION DOLLARS each, but better news is that they were able to use the Crazy Otto and then was transformed into the glorious Ms PAC-MAN!

Super PAC-MAN

There is not much to tell about Super PAC-MAN unlike Ms PAC-MAN and PAC-MAN, but it is pretty well known because he can turn huge and cannot be harmed after eating very large yellow dots below the ghost base and the ghost simply just go through him. In this game there is so much more things PAC-MAN can eat like an apple: 10 points, banana: 20 points, donut: 30 points, hamburger: 40 points, fried egg: 50 points, corn: 60 points, shoe: 70 points, cake: 80 points, peach: 90 points, melon: 100 points, coffee: 110 points, mushroom: 120 points, bell: 130 points, clover: 140 points, Galaxian Boss: 150 points, Gift: 160 points. The thing about this game is instead of PAC-MAN eating coockies he eats these fruits instead of one fruit per level.

Jr PAC-MAN

Jr PAC-MAN is a little bit different to the normal idea of PAC-MAN, of course there is still the object that PAC-MAN has to go around the maze trying to eat all the dots on the maze still trying to avoid the colored ghosts. But this is where the change starts to happen, the mazes in this game are now two times the width of the average PAC-MAN maze. So in that case the moniter has to scroll horizontally, with six energizers thoughout the seven levels in the game. There is also another addition to the world of PAC-MAN, similar to Ms PAC-MAN is another ghost and its name is Tim(the orange one). Other facts about the games that you would need to know is that bonus items appear in each round and move around the maze and as it encounters a dot the dots are suddenly turn from ten points to fifty points, but they do slow Jr down.

Baby PAC-MAN

Baby PAC-MAN is PAC-MAN and Ms PAC-MAN's child which is a girl unlike Jr. As above was said that Jr PAC-MAN was a little bit different than the average PAC-MAN game, but in a way Baby PAC-MAN is different too. The Baby PAC-MAN arcade cabinet is part moniter/ pinball so it is basicly an arcade game and pinball machine. This game is a little bit more conplicated than the average PAC-MAN. So, Baby PAC-MAN goes around the maze trying to eat all the dots like normal PAC-MAN, but this is where it gets different, there are no ENERGIZERS! instead there are the chutes at the bottom of the screen that will transfer you to the pinball table when you enter them. The pinball section operates as the traditional, though smaller pinball table. the player has to try to hit the targets with the metal ball using two button-operated flippers on the side. The player may earn energizers, gain new fruit bonuses, and increase tunnel speed. After losing a ball, the game resumes to the video screen with the chutes closed. The player has to clear the maze or lose a life for the chutes to reopen.
