SEAL Stories
In the early 2000s, Captain Richard Phillips and his crew were taken hostage by Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia. Captain Richard tuned the radio to the International Emergency Radio and left the line open. That way the US Military could hear what was going on. The Navy SEALs were called up and were sent on a US Navy ship nearby. They began negotiating with the pirates. Phillips offered to show the pirates how the lifeboat works. The pirates agreed. As soon as Phillips finished the tutorial the pirates sped off with Phillips in the boat. The Navy SEALs set up sniper positions on the US Navy cruiser and early in the morning, all 3 snipers pulled their triggers in unison.
In August 2011 the CIA found the location of Osama bin Laden’s hideout. The Navy SEALs spent many months training for the raid. And on May 11, 2011, at 10:30 PM the SEALs took off in UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters and flew to Abbottabad, Pakistan. They dismounted the helicopter and began the mission. One group cleared the guest house while the other group cleared the main house. They ascended the stairs that led to bin Laden’s room. Bin Laden stuck his head out of the window. Robert O'Neil fired his rifle twice at bin Laden, killing him.
In June 2005, 5 Navy SEALs were sent to do recon and possibly kill a terrorist working for bin Laden. As they were doing recon, 2 goat herders approached them. The SEALs tied them up and began to discuss what to do. They had 3 options: kill them, let them go, or leave them tied up to the tree. If they let them go, they might tell the Taliban the SEALs position, if they kill the unarmed herders they’ll be charged with murder and put in military prison. If they left them they would starve. Michael Murphy, Marcus Lutrell, and the 3 other SEALs decided to let them go. The goat herders went back to the Taliban to report the SEALs position. A few minutes later over 50 Taliban fighters began attacking the SEALs. The SEALs couldn’t fight the enemy on their own. They tried to use the radio but there was no signal. One of the SEALs grabbed the radio and climbed up on a rock while taking lots of fire to radio in for backup. As soon as the call was finished he died. The remaining SEALs began to retreat but 3 more were killed while doing so. Marcus Lutrell had been shot in the legs, nevertheless, he kept crawling to safety, firing his rifle and throwing grenades while doing so. He reached a small village and was taken care of by the villagers. The Taliban found him but the villagers refused to let him go. One of the villagers volunteered to go to the nearest US military base to tell them what happened. 2 days later, Air Force Night Stalkers and US Marines touched down in the village to rescue Marcus. When Marcus got on the helicopter a US Marine helping him get on said, “Welcome home brother.”
Marcus went on to go to physical therapy and fully recovered from his wounds and give speeches across the nation. His SEAL brothers were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
During the Vietnam War, a US pilot was captured by the North Vietnamese and taken to prison, he failed twice to escape but escaped on his third try. The SEALs heard about this and they knew they needed to rescue him. The SEALs would ride in on SDVs (SEAL Delivery Vehicle) followed by a nuclear powered destroyer and 2 helicopters. One of the helicopters crashed into the ocean all but 2 people died on impact. The 2 survivors would stay in the ocean on the North Vietnamese side for a day. Once the airman was picked up the SEALs went back for the 2 crash survivors. When they arrived the 2 survivors were dead.
Chris Kyle was a legendary US sniper. Chris joined the Navy and became a SEAL. He had a natural talent for marksmanship, growing up hunting in the backwoods. He was deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. He scored 211 kills and a few probables. He returned to his Texas home but was sadly killed by an Iraq War veteran with PTSD at a shooting range in rural Texas. Chris Kyle's
funeral was held at the Texas State Cemetery.
I think this is important because these are very important parts of US History.
